Warning - non-fic post!
One of my very rare non-fic postings here - I want to sum up my previous year's movie tally, mostly for myself, and just in case anyone else is mildly curious.
First off, let me just warn you that I am ever so much of a movie slut. I adore them. Always have. Give me the big screen, a comfy seat, folks around me, and possibly some popcorn and a Coke, and I am all yours. Do with me as you will, as long as you tell me a story, and give me some characters about whom to care. There is very little at which I draw the line, except gore porn, and movies blatantly designed for those between 18 and 12. A very little Zev Efron goes waaaay too far.
So. What did I see last year? Well, first of all, of the 10 Oscar nominations, I saw 7. They were Hurt Locker (totally deserved to win), Up, Up in the Air, Precious, The Blind Side, An Education, and Avatar (in order of preference). The other three were out of distribution by the time we got to them, but I would like to see them all on DVD (but watching DVDs just never quite grabs me any more - I'm too distractable. Keep thinking of other things I need/want to do. Main reason I never watch TV.)
Other movies? Crazy Heart, The Fantastic Mr. Fox (loved that one), The Proposal, The Hangover (OK, I live in a 3 guy household - plus, it really was funny), Julie & Julia (Streep totally should have won for that delightful rendition of Julia Child), Invictus, Zombieland (what a hoot!), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (aww, look, they're so grown up! bless. *mom-like squee*), Nine (wanted so bad to be Chicago and so wasn't), The Princess and the Frog (aww. Disney gorgeousness), and Public Enemies (c'mon, Johnny Depp).
But my best two times at the movies this year? (And actually I saw both more than once ;D) Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes. Both of these are two of my original three big fandom loves (obviously LOTR would be the third!), dating back from my teen years, and both of the movies absolutely nailed why I love those two worlds so. I can't tell you how happy I am that both have, apparently, second installments in the works. I plan to be there for the midnight opening showing, just as I was for ROTK.I think you only really start getting old when you lose your ability to squee, and I don't plan on having that happen any time soon.
So, *clears throat*, sorry for that delay on getting the last bit on News From Bree wrapped up. I've been distracted (as happens so very easily for me - Ooh! Look! Shiny!) by posting my fics on AO3 and actually reading them ALL for the very first time. Well, there are some phrases I won't be using again. Sorry, guys.

The advantage to DVDs is that when you think of something you want to do -- like go to the toilet, or get a drink -- you can!

Truer words were never spoke. But therein lies the difficulty of trying to sustain a series. *sigh*

True enough, but I'm never as lost in the story (no matter how cheesy/ridiculous/patently godawful) as I am in a theatre. And as I mentioned, I am easy. Oh so very easy. I may dis it later on, but never while I am under the spell. Tell me more, people, tell me more.

Isn't that a nice thing to find in a movie, makes it all worthwhile. I'm the one who'll wait, then buy the movie on DVD. The only movie I saw in the theater this last year was Star Trek which I loved and had now seen numerous times on DVD. I have Julia/Julie (didn't like so much) and next week at work, will see Precious and the following discussion related to our wk. You just reminded me to buy that Sherlock Holmes DVD today from Blockbuster. Thanks!

I loved Julia, but Julie, not that much. Probably because I remember watching the original, when I was young, and she was every bit as much fun as Meryl made her out to be. A true original.
Precious never really made it out in wide release in the area in which I work, so only a few kids saw it (pirated copy, they said :O), so they were impressed that I treked out to downtown LA to see it (absolutely worth it - Mo'Nique's final scene will absolutely floor you). They were asking me if I'd buy the DVD though, and I said no way, because I don't think I could watch it more than once.
Since the only time I buy DVDs is when I know I will want to watch it repeatedly, the only DVD I've purchased since LOTR was Star Trek. But you say Sherlock Holmes is out? *grabby hands* Let's add another to that list. ;D

Isn't that the truth! Especially when they come in batches, with dry spells in between.
I think Shutter Island is this weekend, since I know there are some twists to it, and the longer we wait, the more of a chance I'll know what they are (although I think I'm guessing one, just from the previews ;D).

As for the films, hmmm, I saw Up which was excellent - we took the kids, too, and they understood it and loved it (which is more than I can say about the Princess and the Frog which was a disaster in so many ways). And yes, Harry Potter was lovely to see from a nostalgic point of view (also, lots of Snape drooling). :)

I just saw Precious and Up In the Air, and they're both a good investment of time. Although I didn't think Precious was a great movie, the performances were transcendent. Rare, powerful women in those roles.

No, was hoping it was out but found out today the release date for the DVD is 3-30-10.

Have been a Trekkie and a Holmes addict from my teen years, and I was leery on both (as I was on LOTR so many years ago now), but they both captivated me. Am very ready to sign on to both of those ships. They're exciting!

Wow.
Save for a couple of crossover pieces, I've never really read LOTR fic before. I'm thinking I might have to remedy that now, and maybe write my own to boot because what you did absolutely floored me.
I'd always been of the opinion that Sam/Frodo were the slashiest pairing that ever slashed, but I loved everything about the world you created in Shire Morns which made it so much more enthralling than hobbit!porn has any right to be!
So anyway, this is me popping by to say I'm a big ol' fangirl of yours and I've friended your journal.

Thank you so very much for your kind words, especially on Shire Morns, which holds a very dear place in my heart. (And I shall hug it, and pet it, and call it George - squee!)
Thank you very much for stopping by and letting me know, and I'll be friending you likewise, my dear!
