CicLAvia San Pedro
LA has this thing called CicLAvia that they do 3 or 5 times a year. Usually I find out about it the day of, and we already have plans. But this time, it was the weekend before, and it was on the coast, and we finally did it.
So here's what it is. They block off about 5 - 10 miles of a particular route, and open it up to bikers, walkers, skaters, and just about everyone but those in cars. It's meant to let you have a chance to get to know a neighborhood you might not otherwise, and the route always has a few "hubs", where you can find free water being handed out, Porta-potties, bike repairs for free, entertainment, etc.
The route today went from San Pedro, Port of Los Angles, and ended up in Wilmington. We walked the San Pedro part (there was a free trolley to take us back), and it was a good time. You had your dedicated bikers for sure, but so many families with parents wobbling away and the little kids on their bikes too. Also many parents walking pushing kids in strollers. Packs of skaters whizzed by from time to time, and occasional bikers provided a soundtrack for all and sundry. My favorite was the rather hefty guy biking with his buddies. His bike had an old-school Schwinn type front, a vinyl coach mounted behind, and a cooler firmly attached to the back. Dude was set, man.
Here ya go if you are curious - http://laist.com/2017/08/13/ciclavia_cruises_through_san_pedro.php
