I recently transferred all my fics from my Live Journal to this spiffy new location. They may all be found in Memories here. And in case you've ever wondered what the order of them are, this stickie might be useful.

ETA: Just Shire Morns and 221B Bag End for now, but will get all here someday.
OK, gonna Mom today.
So I have two sons, ages 28 and 30. And the younger is getting married in April.
He was a puzzle, growing up, and it wasn't easy. But then she entered his life, and she has been clearly the best thing that ever happened to him. And visa versa. They've been together for nine years now.
And since engagement pics are apparently the thing now, here ya go. Shot in Ojai, CA.

You know when you have no food or water?
No power, no fuel? You know what you really need?
Paper towels. Yeah, that's the ticket.
*cannot face-palm hard enough*

And there are times when I can't even with being American.
Thoughts and prayers? You got nothing. Unless you are going to get real, I do not want to hear from your sorry ass.
Just had to get that out.
Just had to get that out.
Oh, whoa, is it October already?
That month that seems like it should be autumn, but in So. Cal. is a tease and a fraud, and will whip up a Santa Ana and burn you out of house and home if it feels like it.
If we make it to the other side, we are A-Ok.
If we make it to the other side, we are A-Ok.
OK so I can't even tell you how.
But one thing lead to another, and I started flash-backing to my childhood.
But seriously it was what it was and it was the best.
Being born in 1951, the '50s were my childhood years. And you couldn't do better than that.
Technically, I wasn't born in Palm Springs, but my parents returned there when I was 2 months old, so for the next 25 years, that's all I knew. We moved into my childhood home when I was 2 years old (all 3 of my sisters were born while we lived there) and my 89-years old mom lives there yet. We got a big lot (sand was cheap) and my Dad was in the construction biz, so eventually we had a big house.
But the summers I remember (125 F, mind you) consisted of my mom kicking us outside (her reading time, mind you). Us 4 girls? in our panties. Why wear more? We roamed our backyard, blonde hair, blue eyes, and brown as berries every one. I invented fantastical plots (being the oldest) and we buried treasure, built castles in the mud under the cottonwood tree, climbed up the tree to escape the witch, and generally rampaged all over the backyard until Mom let us back in.
At which, of course, it was time to settle down with the latest treasure from the library and dream some more.
Do children have lives like this anymore? And what a loss that is.

So a busy weekend.
Los Angeles has this awesome thing that happens every couple of years or so where all the museums, galleries, random cultural things, etc. focus on a central theme. It's called Pacific Standard Time. A couple of years ago, it was Mid-Century California Design, and it was awesome.
This time, it is Latin-American and Latino Art. If you want to check it out, here ya go. http://www.pacificstandardtime.org/
We've seen a couple so far, and Saturday we went to the Annenberg Center for Photography in Century City, which had a Cuba Is. . . exhibit, but what is even better, a short video covering those photographers and their motivations/journeys. In case you are interested, here you are. https://www.annenbergphotospace.org/
And then this afternoon, we hustled downtown to watch the LA Opera do Carmen. As you do. Gotta vote that opera as the one with the best songs and most awesome plot ever. Yeah, Aida, bring on your elephants, but girl buried in tomb vs girl stabbed by her ex-lover because she is just too damn sexy? No contest.

Aaaaand a book report.
The Withered Arm and Other Stories, Thomas Hardy
So back when I was a teen, Hardy was totally my jam. Tragic heroines, rural English countryside, what was not to love?
And now, however, I notice that Hardy is the patron saint of Make one small miscalculation, and your life is straight down the tubes, girl. (Heads up, guys, not so much for you.)
Hmmm.

So last week?
It was 105 degrees F (41 C). Today? 53 degrees F (12 C) and breezy as all get out. All of us are walking around like, Yeaaaaah. :)
Weather be bi-polar, but we'll take this for sure.

Math nerds gonna math nerds
Today was Math Collaboration Day at my school, which is a cool thing. It's a chance for the entire Math Dept. to call in subs, get together on our own, and plan out stuff, resolve issues, and just do math.
I'm on several district committees and such like, and it always tickles me when they pass out some activities we can have our kids work on. And all the teachers are like whatevers, gimme the math. Which we promptly attack, happy as clams.
Not quite the same reaction we get from our students when we pass it out to them, alas.

And there was Back to School Night.
You just never know who's gonna show up. Good students, the worst, random kids in the middle.
And almost invariably, the parents' first question. Not the "Why don't they have an A?" which is typical in more affluent districts, but the "Are they behaving themselves? Are they good?"
And you have to wonder how many times have they been called out on their kids' behavior.
And as a teacher. you just really have to separate the kid and the grade. Sure, this kid is going to totally flunk, because of Issues, but that doesn't make them a bad kid. Some of my kids who don't do diddly-squat are still my pets. Yeah, sure, they'll flunk your class, but you being someone who they can talk to is worth more to them than class credits.
It's a crazy world.

Surfaces again.
For the 40th odd year, we were off to the LA County Fair this weekend. It has changed a lot over the decades, but since the county still has a few agricultural pockets, there are still the animals and the various contests. I miss Irene Whatsherface. and her Wall O' Jam. That woman dominated, I tell you what. And then there's my stomping grounds, the Textile Division. AKA Hand-made garments.
Used to be, there were many divisions, and I learned early on how to game them. Boy's clothes? Ain't nobody who does that. But since I had a couple of sons, that was my jam. Until they got old enough to give home-made the side-eye. But basically I stuck with clothes I made for myself, and got many a ribbon.
So for awhile, things got crazy, and I didn't have the time, but I reentered the fray about 5 years back. But alas, it is a different scene these days. First of all, only 2 divisions. Clothes. And costumes. Then it's the Danish judging system, wherein there is more than one blue ribbon, etc. Since there are only 2 categories, I guess. And worst of all, I think they've lost their little old lady judging panel who used to leave little notes for you. "Buttonholes could have been a little straighter, but those were some sweet seam finishings, sweetie."
So the upshot is that the orange linen dress that had a hella engineering got a blue ribbon, and the Halloween dress (Jane Austin meets La Dia de los Muertos) got a red, which I'm chill with since I basically threw it together in a weekend, and a top that I randomly threw in, becuase I always enter 3 things, also got a red. So I'm pretty chuffed. :)

Wait what a minute what day is it?
Well tomorrow is Back To School Night. Or, any teachers' least favorite night ever.
First of all, since I live an hour's commute away from my school, I'm in for the Longest Day Ever (only tied by Graduation Night, but I never begrudge that one). Head off at 6:00, get home by 9:00.
Mind you, school has only been on for 4 weeks. And I have app. 230 kids with whom to become familiar. And they will be wandering by at all times (not just their period) which ratchets up the difficulty level a notch or two.
And there is absolutely no telling which kid, with family in tow, will show up. The best of the class, the worst, some random kid in the middle, it's all a crap shoot.
And, to throw in the mix, I am assigned the math-phobic kids. So a huge part of my job is to assure both the student and the parents that, yes, you can do this. It's all good, and you will get through this, I promise.
No pressure at all. See you on the flip side tomorrow. Or not.

La Tuna fire seems to be a done deal. Which is amazing.
Los Angeles is a rather odd city. What was a collection of 100 or so small towns turned into Los Angeles because they signed up for the water. So towns that had their own are not part of LA (Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, San Fernando, etc.), but everything around them is. So LA is a collection of canyons, valleys, mountains, flatlands, and random bit and pieces left out.
The La Tuna fire, largest ever within LA, is 7000+ acres. But only 4 dwellings have been lost.
So here is La Tuna Canyon. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=8cQ0JutY&id=A76C7F496670A9CCA46E7947BF1EB832DA63AB15&thid=OIP.8cQ0JutYBRFyNs-wky48sAEsDI&q=La+Tuna+Canyon+LA&simid=608037104475833322&selectedIndex=5&ajaxhist=0

Weather has been rather insane lately in these parts.
107 degrees? Well what are you going to do...wait what? Now it's 89 and there's thundershowers?
Okaaay, I'll take that. . . No we were just kidding. Here. Have your 105 back again hahaha.
So we went to see Dunkirk. Visually amazing, but I'd like to have seen a bit more on the gathering the troops together side of it. Plus gratuitous overuse of the Nimrod Variation. I see you, Zimmer.

Zoo Day!
Went to the Santa Barbara Zoo today. It's a delightful small zoo, perfect for the younger set, so there were strollers galore. It has a train ride, too, as any self-respecting zoo should have. And it is on the most delightful location, on a hill across the street from the beach.

Alas, Gemina is no longer with us. I took my sons there every year when they were young, and Gemina was always the highlight.

Labor Day Weekend for the win!
So we are four weeks in. My 3 Geometry classes are the best. The first progress report goes out next week and nobody is flunking. Major win. (One kid is flirting with it, but he knows why. Fortunately, I had his older sister a couple of years ago, and she is apparently giving him a reality check. He knows what he's got to do.) And a good half of each class have some sort of A.
Because I teach the math-phobic, this is what I aim for. So much of my job is to get them to say, hey, I can actually do this.
The grades will go down over time, as well they should, to more realistic levels. But I aim to start them all high. How far down the grade goes is absolutely up to them.

So tomorrow is Friday.
And that means that racist POTUS will probably do something racist. As he does. Looks like DREAMERS are the next to get it.
Fun fact - one of the kids at my school, two years ago, aced 4 AP classes his senior year. Total 5's all way 'round. No one in his family had ever graduated high school before. He was offered full-on scholarships from both MIT and Cal Tech. Decisions, decisions. (He chose MIT, alas.)
God knows we don't want that type of hoodlum hanging around.

So I saved Charo for her own post.
Because she was utterly delightful.
Some of us of a certain age remember Charo from Johnny Carson or The Love Boat (most guest appearances ever!).
But that was girlfriend doing what she had to do.
First of all, let's just put it out there. She's at least my age and possibly a bit older. And yet she works hard for the money. First of all, she gets a conga line going with the box seats, no mean task. "Hot, hot, hot!"
Then she shades the audience. "I am psychic, did you know? I know all of you are looking at me right now, and saying, 'How old is that bitch?' ". *audience collectively guffaws*
And then she gets down to business. Small world. She studied with Segovia as a teen. I was 18 when I saw Segovia in concert at Pomona College. He was amazing and well into his 80's, and I have never seen anyone who did NOT want to leave the stage the way he did. He did at least 9 encores. And at the same time, he's teaching her.
So although he was not a flamingo guitarist, she clearly picked up the finger skills from him.
Supposedly she puts in 3 hours a day. It totally shows.
And my favorite bit - her sister sewed her costume. As she has from the start. #family goals.
